EARTH, needlework on cotton, embroidered by hand,100 x 100 cm, 2012
Maps help us to find our position. They show the precise point where we are so that we can chart a route to where we want to go. Now-a-days maps made of paper have been outdated by newly invented devices that accomplish their original function. But a map is not only a tool to check a direction, an orientation, but it also expresses a way of thinking, a picture of the reality according to the moment.
This needlework is a map of our planet. The appearance of Earth is based on the drawing of Christopher and Ralph Scotese that shows how our planet will look 250 million years from now: a geography unfamiliar and unrecognisable to us.
On the embroidery is listed a selection of science fiction novels, all of them dealing with a future scenery where there isn’t anymore the memory of a planet named Earth, or where it exists only in legends
