Hotel San Gottardo (2012) is a project consisting of the lighting of the sign of the dismissed Hotel San Gottardo, in the city of Como.
Founded in 1922, it was the Hotel that initiated the future economic life of Como. Despite its geographical, orographical and "social" centrality in the life and development of the city, since its closure (almost 20 years ago), this majestic structure is surrounded by darkness and has not been included in the re-lighting project which interested the city centre.
On the 19th of July 2012, from 5 pm to 7 am of the next day: two ellipsoidal reflector spotlights normally used in theaters will turn on at 5 pm and light up the Hotel, even if still not visibly. The more the sun lowers and the darkness raises, the more the spotlights will project artificial light, underlining the central but dark presence of this building in the middle of the city. What remains is a photograph taken from an optimal perspective that is very similar to the original pictures representing the Hotel in its authentic appearance.
